Lake Fellsendavatn

Guðmundur Tyrfingsson
Guðmundur Tyrfingsson offers you unforgettable fishing trips in the Icelandic highlands. The fishing spots are located in a part of the country that can be considered as one of Iceland's natural gems. Here you have the biggest wet desert in Europe where elements of nature and weather are in a constant struggle. It is a world of huge contrasts that still found a harmony between nature, volcanic impact, ice, snow, water and the fish living in them. In these areas nature find a perfect way to combine pure wilderness, green oasis 's full with bird life, fresh clean air, amazing volcanic landscapes and rivers and lakes that are rich in trout and Arctic char.

Fishing the beautiful Kaldakvísl part 1
Famous in GT's fishing program are the rivers Tungnaá and Kaldakvísl. Both rivers are well-known for producing big and very tasty fish. In these undisturbed waters fish easily can reach sizes from three to up to ten pounds. Iceland's trout is renowned for their amazing colours and spots. The beautiful Arctic char is found in most of the river and lake systems as well

Fly Fishing at Fellsendavatn

Fellsendavatn is a very nice small but windy lake in the proximity of Lake Thorisvatn. Fellsendavatn is easy accessible by a track from the main road to Lakes Veidivotn. The lake is known for its beautiful brown trout in ranges between three to six pounds. The surrounding is absolutely incredible and for most tourists it will look as if they are fishing on the moon. The area is almost devoid of vegetation and does not offer much shelter or possibilities for pitching a tent.

Wetting flies in Þórisvatn

Þórisvatn is the second largest lake in Iceland, with spectacular landscape. The size of the lake hasn't had any effect on the fishing. You mostly get brown trout there that weigh up to 1.5-3 pounds. Dramatic surroundings and opposites in nature meet.

Fishing between the glaciers
Kvíslárveitur is a large spectacular area in the mid-highlands. When the weather allows you, glaciers can be seen in west and east direction at the same time. There's a wonderful view over impressive mountains. The fishing area is massive and you would have no problem with fishing here for an entire week.

Clothing for arctic regions                                                       Clothing overview 2
I often get questions about what kind of materials and clothing somebody should select when going to fish in the wild far up north. It's not an easy question and most materials depend on what kind of fishing a person is looking for. In this little overview I try to complete a clothing list that will be useful for the active fly fisher. Each person is different and everybody has it's own wishes and preferences but I still think a good specification can be helpful for everybody.

Where to stay while wetting your flies in the highlands of Iceland?
Fosstún Apartment Hotel
Highland Centre Hrauneyjar and Hotel Highland

What to put in/on  your fly fishing vest?
Forceps or multi-tool is mostly use to squeeze of the barb of my fly hooks and makes it possible to unhook a fish much easier at times they took the fly a little deeper then expected. I use a forceps with the claw mouth in a 45% angle.

Certificate of disinfection
As a preventive measure against spreading infectious diseases of freshwater fishes to Iceland from other countries, it is prohibited according to The Salmon, Trout and Char Fishing Act of 1970, chapter X, to use fishing equipment which has been used while angling abroad, unless such equipment has been disinfected according to valid rules.

Veiðivötn or Fishing Lakes

Outside the GT fishing package but worthwhile to go are the fishing lakes. These lakes are located in a part of the country that is surely among the youngest and wildest pearls of the central highlands. It comprises about 50 lakes of different sizes, from which many are called crater lakes. The area is about 20 km long and 5 km wide and has a south-westerly to north-easterly direction. The craters and the lakes lie in two rows. Most of the lakes are fed and discharged underground. The original "Ice Age Brown Trout" is still to be found in Veidivotn Lakes and is caught in 20-30 of those Lakes
